Background and recording

[dru] first met Joe Robbie Stadium during a recording session for “Therapy”, a collaboration between [dru] and Nick Garcia. Joe Robbie Stadium, a friend and frequent collaborator of Garcia, later attended a November 2024 performance by [dru] and Scrúe Hefner. Following the show, [dru] invited him to The Realm, where the pair began recording together.

The earliest sessions primarily served to establish the pair’s working relationship. [dru] has described adapting his recording process according to the producer with whom he is working, and the initial sessions allowed him and Joe Robbie Stadium to develop an approach suited to their collaboration. None of the recordings from this earliest period were retained for the completed album.

Recording continued intermittently from November 2024 through April 2026 and overlapped with sessions for Against All Odds. The extended recording period coincided with significant changes in [dru]’s personal and professional life and periods of reduced activity within Shadow League. Joe Robbie Stadium remained a close collaborator throughout the process, encouraging [dru] to continue recording during periods of inactivity.

As the album developed, its themes increasingly reflected the circumstances surrounding its creation. [dru] later characterized the period not simply as one of loss, but of transformation, with relationships and circumstances changing rather than disappearing. The album was completed in April 2026.

Concept and composition

The Reigns Coming is structured around the dual imagery of rain and reign. Rain and storms represent periods of hardship, instability and spiritual conflict, while flooding functions as a metaphor for cleansing and renewal. The corresponding idea of a “reign” introduces themes of authority, self-belief and reemergence.

The recurring phrase “The Reigns Coming, I prayed on it” appears across several tracks and serves as a lyrical motif connecting the album’s themes of faith, arrival and transformation.

Biblical imagery appears throughout the album, particularly the story of Noah and the flood, alongside recurring references to God, faith, martyrdom and spiritual struggle. The record also addresses betrayal, vice and addiction, artistic supremacy and survival. Rather than presenting the storm solely as destructive, the album gradually reframes upheaval as a necessary process through which renewal becomes possible.

Musically, the album uses sparse, sample-based production, including material drawn from obscure Latin recordings and gospel and choral music. Gospel recordings were particularly prominent during the project’s earlier sessions, although much of that material was ultimately discarded.

“Purple Reign / The Flood”

“Purple Reign / The Flood” serves as a central expression of the album’s rain/reign motif. Its lyrics combine imagery of kingship, faith, competition and transformation with references to Miami culture and alchemy.

The composition is divided into two movements. “Purple Reign” transitions into the hidden second section, “The Flood”, through sampled dialogue depicting Noah’s flood and a test of faith. The dialogue is followed by the sound of a thunderstorm and a beat switch introducing the second movement.

The track’s imagery of the crown and its burden also develops the “reign” component of the album’s title, with [dru] using the song to address betrayal and reassertion following a period of personal and professional upheaval.

“Ford Coppola in the Trenches”

“Ford Coppola in the Trenches” continues the album’s recurring rain/reign imagery through themes of conflict, endurance and transformation. The song incorporates religious and martyrdom imagery alongside references to warfare and cinema, culminating in a refrain built around the dual meaning of “rain” and “reign”.

Musical sample credits are intentionally undisclosed in accordance with Shadow League’s “NO SAMPLE SNITCHING” policy.

Title and artwork

The title The Reigns Coming incorporates a deliberate play on “rain” and “reign”, reflecting both the album’s storm imagery and its themes of reemergence and authority. The phrase also appears repeatedly throughout the album as a lyrical motif.

[dru] conceived the visual direction of the album artwork from the cover of Joy Division’s Closer, whose stark presentation had long appealed to him. The artwork adopts a similarly minimalist approach, reflecting [dru]’s preference for conveying larger ideas through restrained presentation.

The final cover was designed by Joe Robbie Stadium, with [dru] providing art direction.
