Background and recording

The origins of The Vermillion Heist date to January 2023, during a period in which MRLNRECORDS was producing projects involving members of Shadow League. During sessions for releases including Be Right Back, Baked Goods and WWJD, [dru] and Scrúe Hefner developed a natural chemistry as a pairing, demonstrated on earlier collaborations including “Demi Lovato” and “Ruby Wednesday”.

Following his work with Big J CSB, MRLNRECORDS approached [dru] and Scrúe Hefner about recording a collaborative project. He subsequently withdrew from regular sessions at The Realm to concentrate on production before returning with a collection of instrumentals for the pair to select from.

Recording took place in two principal periods between January 2023 and March 2024 and overlapped with the recording and release of WWJD. Much of the material from the initial sessions was ultimately discarded, with “Jules vs. Vega” among the only early recordings retained for the finished album. Following WWJD, the trio reconvened and recorded the majority of the album’s final nine tracks.

The pairing was characterized by the contrasting approaches of its two rappers. [dru] generally employed a more reserved and introspective style, while Scrúe Hefner favored a more outspoken, braggadocious delivery. Their shared emphasis on lyricism provided common ground between the two approaches.

Concept and composition

An early working title for the project was The Red Tape, an allusion to Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..., commonly known as “The Purple Tape”. The album served as an early reference point because of the similar structure of two rappers associated with a larger group working closely with a central producer.

Cinema also influenced the atmosphere of the recording sessions. Films and other media were frequently projected silently at The Realm while the group recorded, while crime, gangster and blaxploitation films were recurring subjects of discussion. Films viewed or discussed during the period included The Godfather, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Rocky and Friday, while the documentary series The Last Dance was also frequently played.

The album was not initially conceived as a narrative concept record. Instead, its heist motif emerged retrospectively after MRLNRECORDS sequenced the completed recordings. The trio felt that the progression of the music resembled a crime film, with [dru] and Scrúe Hefner functioning as its central characters.

The opening track, “Jules vs. Vega”, takes its title from the characters Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega from Pulp Fiction and introduces the album’s two principal rappers. The song opens with dialogue sampled from the film’s robbery sequence, further establishing the album’s cinematic framing.

“Mano De Dios” serves as the album’s principal introspective passage and illustrates the contrasting approaches of [dru] and Scrúe Hefner, addressing themes of faith, ambition and artistic purpose through [dru]’s more reflective perspective and Scrúe’s braggadocious approach. Written by [dru] during a period of personal difficulty, the song functions as a tonal pause within the album, which the artists retrospectively likened to the moment of reflection preceding the final act of a crime film.

Title and artwork

The album’s final title was developed during a studio session originally intended for recording. Having used The Red Tape as a working title, the trio spent the session considering names associated with the color red before settling on The Vermillion Heist, combining “Vermillion” with the heist motif they had identified in the completed project.

The cover artwork was created by Stu Tender and designed in the style of a vintage blaxploitation and crime-film poster. It depicts MRLNRECORDS, [dru] and Scrúe Hefner alongside imagery including the Miami skyline, an explosion, firearms and a getaway car. Continuing the album’s presentation as a fictional film, the artwork presents [dru] and Scrúe Hefner as its stars and MRLNRECORDS as its director.

Release and promotion

The Vermillion Heist was promoted through a series of heist-themed trailers continuing the project’s cinematic concept. No singles or music videos were released from the album.

A release party was held at THC Studios on June 22, 2024, six days before the album’s release. The Vermillion Heist was released digitally on June 28, jointly credited to MRLNRECORDS, [dru] and Scrúe Hefner as primary artists. A limited physical edition was also produced on CD and subsequently sold out.

Reception and impact

Following its release, The Vermillion Heist increased the visibility of its principal artists within Miami’s underground hip-hop scene. [dru] and Scrúe Hefner appeared in interviews with Check the Rhyme, Dirty5ive and The Heir Cast during the period surrounding the album.

The project directly led to [dru] and Scrúe Hefner being invited by DJ Heron to perform in support of KRS-One, with the pair appearing together rather than as the full Shadow League collective.

MRLNRECORDS subsequently collaborated with Shottie and Money Mogly on MIALIENS, released on November 8, 2024. The project expanded his profile and contributed to increased opportunities outside the Shadow League ecosystem.

In January 2025, The Vermillion Heist was named Rap Album of the Year by LatinXHiphop, honoring releases from 2024.
